Grounded

Grounded Investment Company is a Dutch impact investment cooperative focused on strengthening food systems in Eastern and Southern Africa. The organization invests in local agro-processing companies that connect smallholder farmers with international markets, and combines long-term capital with intensive operational support. In doing so, Grounded positions itself in the part of the value chain where quality, scale, and market access converge.

The focus is on the so-called missing middle: undercapitalized SMEs in the processing phase that have the potential to compete internationally, but need the right capital and guidance to take that step. By strengthening these companies, Grounded contributes to higher product quality, more stable incomes for farmers, and better access to international markets.

Investment Strategy

Grounded’s first fund invests in agri-processing companies that work with large networks of smallholder farmers. Current investments are in high-value, non-perishable products: spices such as cardamom, cinnamon, black pepper, cloves, paprika, chili, and spice blends, alongside coffee and nuts. Tea and cocoa are in the pipeline. The portfolio companies currently reach about 6,000 farmers; within five years, the goal is to reach 50,000.

A Business Case for Regenerative Agriculture

Grounded’s investment thesis is based on a simple logic: quality is the most sustainable competitive advantage in international markets, and quality arises from the combination of regenerative agricultural practices on the land and careful processing in the company. Better practices lead to a better product, a better product to a stronger market position, and a stronger market position to value creation for the company, the farmers, and the investor. In this way, ecological and financial interests are not weighed against each other, but reinforce each other within the same business model.

Operational Support

Grounded works closely with a select group of entrepreneurs, based in regions with the right climatic conditions. In addition to capital, the organization offers hands-on involvement in regenerative agriculture, quality improvement, certification, and market access. By combining long-term capital with local expertise and strong entrepreneurs, Grounded contributes to the development of resilient and regenerative food systems in Africa. This first fund is the first step in a broader ambition to build an investment platform that structurally contributes to this transition.
